Caprice is a practice tool for music teachers and their students, made by Scott Thompson, a cello teacher. This policy explains what the app collects and what it does not.
For teachers, when you create an account:
For students, whose accounts are created by their teacher:
Caprice does not record audio or video of anyone, at any point. There is no recording feature in the app. We do not collect performances, practice audio, photographs, or video of students or teachers.
We do not collect location data, contacts, or device identifiers for advertising. There is no advertising in Caprice, and we do not sell personal information to anyone.
Many music students are children. Please read this part carefully.
Student accounts are created by the teacher, not by the child. A student cannot sign up on their own. The teacher decides what information to enter, and the minimum required is a first name.
What a student's record can contain: their name, optionally an email address supplied by the teacher, the assignments their teacher sends them, and any notes they write back about their own practice. Nothing else.
Parents: you can ask to see, correct, or delete everything held about your child at any time, either through their teacher or by emailing scott@capricemusic.com directly. A request from a parent will be honoured without requiring a reason.
We are actively building a parental consent step so that a parent is asked before a student account is set up. It is not in the current version. Until it ships, the responsibility sits with the teacher who creates the account, and parents can contact us directly at any time using the address above.
We do not use your data to train anything other than the music recognition described below, and we do not send marketing email.
When a teacher corrects music notation in the app, the correction (the cropped image of that measure, the original reading and the corrected one) is saved with no link to any account, and may be used to improve the app's music recognition. It contains music, not people.
Data is stored on cloud servers operated by Railway. Uploaded sheet music is stored via Cloudinary. Email is sent through Google Workspace. We do not sell personal information to third parties.
You can request a copy of your data, a correction to it, or deletion of your account and everything associated with it, at any time, by emailing scott@capricemusic.com.
Questions about this policy, or about your child's information? Email scott@capricemusic.com. A person will answer.
